How can I successfully book end a day?
We all get the same amount of time to steward our lives. Every day, all we get is 1,440 minutes, no more, no less. Jesus told us not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough to deal with! (Matthew 6:34)
I've heard it said that the only way to successfully manage your life is to learn how to manage a single day. A motivational speaker once said, "Successful people do daily what unsuccessful people do occasionally." I wasn't too motivated by that statement because like you, I struggle to do much of anything on the EVERY SINGLE DAY rhythm:)
So much happens between sunrise and sunset.
One day can bring what seems like a month's worth of action! We are all left with the question, "How can I successfully bookend a day?"
The good news is that there is something you and I can do to help keep the days from bleeding together. To help from always living with the lingering, nagging feeling of "Where did the day go??"
A songwriter and worship leader from biblical times wrote some incredibly wise words that are very needed in our fast paced, high stress culture.
They are found in Psalm 92:1-2:
It is good to praise the Lord
and make music to your name, O Most High,
proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night.
Whether you can sing or not isn't the question. The great insight we are given in this passage is that there is something you and I can do that is simple and yet so "resetting" for our souls. After all, I think Socrates was on to something when he said, "The unexamined life is not worth living."
When my alarms goes off and I wake up in the morning, I can thank God for His love before I even begin my day. Then in the evening as my head hits the pillow, I can thank Him for His faithfulness no matter what I had to face during my day.
This bookend strategy brings to mind Matt Redman's lyrics to his song 10,000 reasons:
The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning It's time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes
So no matter when or how you wake up, no matter what you face in your 1,440 minutes today, give this simple strategy a try and see if you can begin bookending a few more days successfully.
Add a comment:
- When do you have to wake up each day versus when you would like to wake up?
- What kind of regular habits do you have to "reset" your soul and gain perspective on your day?
